-DIITEKS 2nd grade (9) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction. Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to: (B) describe main characters in works of fiction, including their traits, motivations, and feelings. According to the SE, students in second grade should be able to describe the main character in a multitude of ways. They should be able to describe their physical traits, character traits, motivations, and feelings. Each one of those should be a separate lesson, so that students have plenty of time to master each one before they combine them all to describe the complete character. The ALS coaches say "go slow now to go fast later" which means teach things in small pieces now so that we can combine them all later with more student mastery. Below you will see some anchor charts from around the internet that will help teach these different concepts. A quick search on Pinterest or in Google brings up so many anchor charts and support to help teach this standard. Just make sure that what you pull is actually supporting what students in your classroom need to learn, because so many of the resources found online are not aligned to the Texas standards, but are Common Core. The next two images came from lessons that I created while I was in training this past summer.
